Pharmacologic Category
Ion-removing Agents; Phosphate-removing Agents. Antidotes. (ATC-Code: V03AE03).
Mechanism of action
Disassociates in upper gastrointestinal tract to lanthanum ions (La^3+^) which bind to dietary phosphate, resulting in insoluble lanthanum phosphate complexes and net decrease in serum phosphate and calcium levels.
Therapeutic use
Reduction of serum phosphate in end-stage renal disease.
Pregnancy and lactiation implications
Teratogenic effects observed in some, but not all, animal studies. Lanthanum not recommended for use during pregnancy. Use with caution during lactation.

Contraindications
None known to date.
Warnings and precautions
Use with caution in active peptic ulcer, ulcerative colitis, Crohn’s disease, or bowel obstruction. Use in children not recommended. Abdominal X-rays might have radiopaque appearance in patients taking lanthanum.
