Pharmacologic Category

Vitamins; Vitamin D. (ATC-Code: A11CC02).

Mechanism of action

Synthetic analog of vitamin D with faster onset of action. Stimulates calcium and phosphate absorption from the small intestine, promotes secretion of calcium from bone to blood. Promotes renal tubule resorption of phosphate.

Therapeutic use

Treatment of hypocalcemia associated with hypoparathyroidism. Prophylaxis of hypocalcemic tetany following thyroid surgery.

Pregnancy and lactiation implications

Enters breast milk and is compatible with lactation.

Unlabeled use

Contraindications

Hypersensitivity to dihydrotachysterol or any component of the formulation. Hypercalcemia. Pregnancy.

Warnings and precautions

Contraindicated in hypercalcemia. Use with caution in coronary artery disease, decreased renal function or renal stones. Use with caution in the elderly.
