Pharmacologic Category

Antidotes. Mucolytic Agents. (ATC-Code: R05CB01; S01XA08; V03AB23).

Mechanism of action

Mucolytic action by opening up the disulfide bonds in the mucoproteins through its free sulfhydryl group.

Therapeutic use

Adjunctive mucolytic therapy in acute and chronic bronchopulmonary disease. Pulmonary complications of surgery and cystic fibrosis. Diagnostic bronchial studies. Antidote for acute acetaminophen toxicity.

Pregnancy and lactiation implications

May provide protective levels in the fetus. Caution during lactation.

Unlabeled use

Prevention of radiocontrast-induced renal dysfunction. Distal intestinal obstruction syndrome.


Hypersensitivity to acetylcysteine or any component of the formulation.

Warnings and precautions

When used as antidote for acetaminophen overdosage, oral administration of acetylcysteine may result in vomiting. Upper GI hemorrhage and acetaminophen-induced hepatotoxicity. Generalized urticaria or other allergic symptoms. Anaphylactoid reaction. Caution in asthma or bronchospasm.
