Brand Names

Europe

Bulgaria: Spiritus Aethylicus; France: Alcool Modifie; Spain: Alcohol.

Drug combinations

Chemistry

Alcohol (Ethyl): C~2~H~6~O. Mw: 46.07. (1) Ethanol. CAS-64-17-5.

Pharmacologic Category

Local Anti-Infectives, Miscellaneous (Topical). Antidotes. (ATC-Codes: D08AX08; V03AB16; V03AZ01).

Mechanism of action

Used to treat ethylene glycol or methanol toxicity, competitively inhibits their metabolism and decreases the formation of toxic metabolites.

Therapeutic use

Anti-infective (topical). Pharmaceutical aid. Therapeutic neurolysis (nerve or ganglion block). Replenishment of fluid and carbohydrate calories.

Pregnancy and lactiation implications

Pregnant women should avoid ethanol intake (teratogenic effects). Ethyl alcohol passes freely into breast milk at a level approximately equivalent to maternal serum level.

Unlabeled use

Antidote for ethylene glycol and for methanol overdose. Treatment of fat occlusion of central venous catheters.

Contraindications

Hypersensitivity to ethyl alcohol or any component of the formulation. Seizure disorder and diabetic coma. Subarachnoid injection of dehydrated alcohol in patients receiving anticoagulants. Pregnancy.

Warnings and precautions

Caution in the following situations: diabetes mellitus (decreases blood sugar), gout, hepatic impairment, shock, and after cranial surgery. Minimize dermal exposure of ethyl alcohol in infants (systemic absorption and toxicity). Use with caution in pregnant women with anticipated postpartum hemorrhage. Should not be administered simultaneously with blood (risk of pseudoagglutination or hemolysis). Not for SubQ administration.
