Pharmacologic Category
Antigout Agents; Xanthine Oxidase Inhibitors. (ATC-Code: M04AA01).
Mechanism of action
Acts on purine catabolism, reducing uric acid.
Therapeutic use
Prevention of attack of gouty arthritis and nephropathy. Treatment of secondary hyperuricemia which may occur during treatment of tumors or leukemia. Prevention of recurrent calcium oxalate calculi. Intravenous treatment of elevated serum and urinary uric acid levels when oral therapy is not tolerated in patients with leukemia, lymphoma, and solid tumor malignancies who are receiving cancer chemotherapy.

Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to allopurinol or any component of the formulation.
Warnings and precautions
Hypersensitivity reactions (vasculitis and Stevens-Johnson syndrome). Bone marrow suppression and hepatotoxicity (use with caution in pre-existing hepatic impairment) have been reported. Do not use to treat asymptomatic hyperuricemia. Caution in renal impairment (increased risk for hypersensitivity reactions). Risk of hypersensitivity in patients receiving ACE inhibitors. Increased risk of skin rash in patients receiving amoxicillin or ampicillin. Use with caution in patients taking diuretics concurrently. The risk of hypersensitivity may be increased in patients receiving thiazides.
