Chemistry

Pharmacologic Category

Diagnostic Agents; Pituitary Function. (ATC-Code: B05XB01).

Mechanism of action

Stimulates pituitary release of growth hormone and prolactin through origins in the hypothalamus.

Therapeutic use

Pituitary function test (growth hormone).

Pregnancy and lactiation implications

Not recommended for use during pregnancy. Use with caution if administered during lactation.

Unlabeled use

Management of severe, uncompensated, metabolic alkalosis after optimizing therapy with sodium and potassium supplements.

Contraindications

Hypersensitivity to arginine or any component of the formulation.

Warnings and precautions

Acute electrolyte disturbances (hyperkalemia, hyponatremia (following overdose), hypophosphatemia, and acidosis) may occur during infusion. Use may lead to life-threatening hyperkalemia in diabetes mellitus, hepatic impairment or in renal impairment. Use with caution in electrolyte imbalance and in children. Avoid use in myocardial infarction.
