Pharmacologic Category

Anorexigenic Agents and Respiratory and Cerebral Stimulants, Miscellaneous. (ATC-Code: N06BA).

Mechanism of action

Binds to the dopamine transporter and inhibits dopamine reuptake, which may result in increased extracellular dopamine levels in the brain.

Therapeutic use

Improve wakefulness in excessive daytime sleepiness associated with narcolepsy and shift work sleep disorder. Adjunctive therapy for obstructive sleep apnea/hypopnea syndrome.

Pregnancy and lactiation implications

Use with caution during pregnancy and lactation.

Contraindications

Hypersensitivity to armodafinil, modafinil, or any component of the formulation.

Warnings and precautions

Risk of serious and life-threatening rashes with modafinil (Stevens-Johnson syndrome, toxic epidermal necrolysis, and drug rash with eosinophilia and systemic symptoms). Risk of multiorgan hypersensitivity reactions (with modafinil) and angioedema and anaphylactoid reactions (with armodafinil). Use not recommended in left ventricular hypertrophy or mitral valve prolapse syndrome. Use caution in history of myocardial infarction, angina, or hypertension. Use with caution in hepatic impairment. Use caution in history of psychosis, depression, or mania (modafinil might worsen symptoms). Use with caution in Tourette’s syndrome (may unmask tics). Potential for drug dependency exists.
