Mechanism of action
Necessary for collagen formation and tissue repair. Involved in some oxidation-reduction reactions as well as other metabolic pathways.
Therapeutic use
Prevention and treatment of scurvy. To acidify urine.
Pregnancy and lactiation implications
Compatible with lactation.
Unlabeled use
Investigational: To decrease the severity of «colds». Dietary supplementation. Possible decreased risk of death by stroke at doses ≥45 mg/day.
Contraindications
Warnings and precautions
Patients with diabetes mellitus as well as those prone to recurrent renal calculi (e.g. dialysis patients) should not take excessive doses for extended periods of time. Some products contain aluminum. Use caution in impaired renal function and in neonates.
