Mechanism of action

Replaces deficient or ineffective endogenous lung surfactant in neonates with respiratory distress syndrome (RDS) or in neonates at risk of developing RDS, preventing the alveoli from collapsing during expiration (endogenous lung surfactant modifies alveolar surface tension, stabilizing the alveoli).

Therapeutic use

Prevention and treatment of respiratory distress syndrome in premature infants.

Pregnancy and lactiation implications

Unlabeled use

Contraindications

Warnings and precautions

May cause transient episodes of bradycardia, decreased oxygen saturation, endotracheal tube blockage or reflux of calfactant into endotracheal tube. For intratracheal administration only. Rapidly affects oxygenation and lung compliance.
