Pharmacologic Category

Skin and Mucous Membrane Agents; Local Anesthetics, Topical. (ATC-Code: M02AB01; N01BX04).

Mechanism of action

Induces release of substance P (main chemomediator of pain impulses from the periphery) from peripheral sensory neurons, depleting the neuron of substance P (after repeated stimulation), and prevents reaccumulation.

Therapeutic use

Pain associated with postherpetic neuralgia, rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, diabetic neuropathy. Postsurgical pain.

Pregnancy and lactiation implications

Unlabeled use

Pain associated with psoriasis, chronic neuralgias unresponsive to other forms of therapy, and intractable pruritus.

Contraindications

Hypersensitivity to capsaicin or any component of the formulation.

Warnings and precautions

For external use only. Should not be applied to broken or irritated skin. The affected area should not be tightly bandaged or exposed to direct sunlight or a heat lamp.
