Carbamide peroxide releases hydrogen peroxide which serves as a source of nascent oxygen upon contact with catalase. Deodorant action is probably due to inhibition of odor-causing bacteria. Softens impacted cerumen due to its foaming action.
Therapeutic use
Local treatment and hygienic prevention of minor infections and inflammation or irritation of the gums and mouth, including canker sores (aphthous ulcers), gingivitis, periodontitis, stomatitis, and Vincent’s infection. As an adjunct in the removal of hardened or tightly packed cerumen from the external ear canal or as an aid in the prevention of ceruminosis (in combination with anhydrous glycerine).
Pregnancy and lactiation implications
Unlabeled use
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to carbamide peroxide or any component. Otic preparation should not be used in a perforated tympanic membrane or following otic surgery. Ear drainage, ear pain, or rash in the ear. Dizziness. Oral preparation should not be used for self-medication in children <3 years of age.
Warnings and precautions
With prolonged use of oral carbamide peroxide, there is a potential for overgrowth of opportunistic organisms, damage to periodontal tissues, and delayed wound healing. Do not use in ear drainage or discharge, ear pain, irritation, or rash in ear.
