Pharmacologic Category
Genitourinary Smooth Muscle Relaxants. Antioxidant. (ATC-Code: G04BX13; M02AX03).
Mechanism of action
Exact mechanism unknown. Induces and alters inflammatory tissue responses, modulates collagen disposition, influences nerve conduction and neurotransmission, and alters cell proliferation in fibroblasts and hepatocytes; thus exerting an anti-inflammatory, analgesic, and muscle-relaxant effect. It may also interact with free radicals forming formaldehyde, possibly contributing to fixative effect on biological tissues.
Therapeutic use
Symptomatic relief of interstitial cystitis.
Pregnancy and lactiation implications
Unknown risk. Teratogenic in animals. Use caution during lactation.
Unlabeled use
I.V. use to reduce intracranial pressure in trauma patients. Also being studied for its free radical scavenging properties, stress-induced gastric ulcers, and tissue protectant.
Contraindications

Warnings and precautions
May cause hypersensitivity reactions (rare). Ophthalmic effects in animal studies (precaution in humans). Use with caution in urinary tract malignancy (may be harmful due to vasodilatory effects). For bladder instillation only (do not administer I.V./I.M.).
