Pharmacologic Category

EENT Preparations; Antiallergic Agents. Ophthalmic Antihistamine H~1~ Blocker. (ATC-Code: R06AX24; S01GX10).

Mechanism of action

Relatively selective histamine H~1~-receptor antagonist with mast-cell stabilizing properties. Inhibits release of histamine from the mast cell.

Therapeutic use

Prevention of ocular itching associated with allergic conjunctivitis.

Pregnancy and lactiation implications

Teratogenic effects not observed in animal studies. There are no adequate, well-controlled studies in pregnant women. Use with caution during lactation.

Contraindications

Hypersensitivity to epinastine or any component of the formulation.

Warnings and precautions

Risk of bacterial keratitis with contamination of multiple-dose ophthalmic solutions. Contains benzalkonium chloride, which may be absorbed by contact lenses. For topical ophthalmic use only. Not for treatment of contact lens irritation.
