Pharmacologic Category
Anticonvulsants; Hydantoins. (ATC-Code: N03AB01).
Mechanism of action
Hydantoin-derivative anticonvulsant. Stabilizes seizure threshold and prevents spread of seizure activity.
Therapeutic use
Used for the prophylactic management of tonic-clonic (grand mal) seizures and partial seizures with complex symptomatology (psychomotor seizures). Usually administered concomitantly with other anticonvulsants such as phenytoin or phenobarbital.
Pregnancy and lactiation implications
Maternal ingestion of antiepileptic agents associated with neonatal coagulation defects/bleeding usually within 24 hours of birth. Not recommended during lactation.

Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to ethotoin or any component of the formulation. Hepatic abnormalities. Hematologic disorders.
Warnings and precautions
Hydantoin-like compounds may interfere with folic acid metabolism precipitating megaloblastic anemia. Hypersensitivity reactions may occur. Effects with other sedative drugs or ethanol may be potentiated. Anticonvulsants should not be discontinued abruptly (might increase seizure frequency).
