Pharmacologic Category
Antigout Agents; Xanthine Oxidase Inhibitor. (ATC-Code: M04AA03).
Mechanism of action
Selectively inhibits xanthine oxidase (XO/XDH), the enzyme responsible for the conversion of hypoxanthine to xanthine to uric acid, thereby decreasing uric acid. At therapeutic concentration does not inhibit other enzymes involved in purine and pyrimidine synthesis.
Therapeutic use
Chronic management of hyperuricemia in patients with gout.
Pregnancy and lactiation implications
Use during pregnancy only if potential benefit to mother outweighs potential risk to fetus. Not recommended during lactation.

Concurrent use with azathioprine, mercaptopurine, or theophylline.
