Pharmacologic Category
Antianemia Drugs; Iron Preparations. Iron Salt. (ATC-Code: B03AC07).
Mechanism of action
Replaces iron found in hemoglobin, myoglobin, and specific enzymes. Allows transportation of oxygen via hemoglobin.
Therapeutic use
Repletion of total body iron content in iron-deficiency anemia patients undergoing hemodialysis in conjunction with erythropoietin therapy.
Pregnancy and lactiation implications
Adverse events not observed in animal reproduction studies. There are no well-controlled studies available in pregnant women. Treatment of iron deficiency anemia in pregnant women is as in nonpregnant women and in most cases, oral iron preparations may be used. Use caution during lactation.
Unlabeled use
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to ferric gluconate or any component of the formulation. Use in any anemia not caused by iron deficiency. Iron overload.
Warnings and precautions
Flushing and transient hypotension may occur. May augment hemodialysis-induced hypotension. Potentially serious hypersensitivity reactions may occur. Avoid rapid administration. Use with caution in the elderly. Contains benzyl alcohol, associated with «gasping syndrome» in neonates. Use only in documented iron deficiency (caution with hemoglobinopathies or other refractory anemias as iron overload may occur).
