Pharmacologic Category
Expectorants. (ATC-Code: R05CA03).
Mechanism of action
Thought to act as expectorant by irritating gastric mucosa and stimulating respiratory tract secretions, thereby increasing respiratory fluid volumes and decreasing mucous viscosity.
Therapeutic use
Symptomatic management of productive cough to loosen and thin sputum and bronchial secretions and ease expectoration.
Pregnancy and lactiation implications
Reproduction studies not conducted. Unknown whether drug is excreted in breast milk (use caution).

Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to guaifenesin or any component of the formulation.
Warnings and precautions
Some products may contain phenylalanine. Risk of overdosage and toxicity (including death) in children <2 years of age.
