Pharmacologic Category
Emetics. Antidotes. Homeopathic products. (ATC-Code: R05CA04; V03AB01).
Mechanism of action
Irritates gastric mucosa and stimulates medullary chemoreceptor trigger zone to induce vomiting.
Therapeutic use
Treatment of acute oral drug overdosage and in certain poisonings. Treatment of severe coughing, homeopathy.
Pregnancy and lactiation implications
Unknown whether ipecac syrup can cause fetal harm when administered to pregnant women. Ipecac syrup should be used during pregnancy only when clearly needed. Should be used with caution in nursing women.
Unlabeled use
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to ipecac or any component of the formulation. Avoid use in unconscious patients. Patients with no gag reflex. Following ingestion of strong bases, acids, or volatile oils. Seizures.
Warnings and precautions
Use with caution in bulimia. Use with caution in cardiovascular disease. May not be effective in antiemetic overdose. Rarely, prolonged vomiting associated with serious adverse effects and death in patients treated with ipecac syrup for drug overdosage or poisoning. Lethargy, irritability and hyperactivity occurred. Cardiotoxicity occurs principally when drug is overdosed or ipecac syrup is abused chronically. Myopathy associated with chronic abuse of ipecac syrup described. Fever and diaphoresis reported. Ipecac syrup should be used with caution in impaired cardiac function and sclerotic or other pathologic changes in blood vessels. Some clinicians state that ipecac syrup should not be used in debilitated or geriatric patients or those with medical conditions (e.g. severe hypertension, bradycardia, hemorrhagic diathesis).
