Chemistry

Lactobacillus: Preparation made from acid-producing bacterium.

Pharmacologic Category

Dietary Supplement. Probiotic. (ATC-Code: G01AX14).

Mechanism of action

Helps re-establish normal intestinal flora. Suppresses growth of potentially pathogenic microorganisms by producing lactic acid.

Therapeutic use

Promotes normal bacterial flora of intestinal tract. Treatment of uncomplicated diarrhea, particularly that caused by antibiotic therapy. Lactobacillus preparations have been used intravaginally for treatment of bacterial vaginosis. May provide relief in hives, fever blisters, canker sores, and adolescent acne.

Pregnancy and lactiation implications

Pregnant women should only use Lactobacillus acidophilus under medical supervision.

Contraindications

Hypersensitivity to any component of the formulation.

Warnings and precautions

Do not use in intestinal damage or infection. May produce increase in intestinal flatus at beginning of therapy. Do not use in weakened immune system.
