Mechanism of action
Specific direct inhibitor of thrombin.
Therapeutic use
Anticoagulation in heparin-induced thrombocytopenia and associated thromboembolic disease.
Pregnancy and lactiation implications
Unlabeled use
Investigational: Prevention or reduction of ischemic complications associated with unstable angina.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to hirudins or any component of the formulation.
Warnings and precautions
Anaphylaxis and hypersensitivity reactions reported. Bleeding common. Use with caution in cirrhosis, or in renal impairment. Administer cautiously after a thrombolytic episode (risk of intracranial bleeding). Allergic reactions common with concomitant administration of streptokinase. Contraindicated in recent stroke.
