Pharmacologic Category

Antacids and Adsorbents. Cathartics and Laxatives; Hyperosmotic Laxatives. Nutritional Supplements. Magnesium Salt. (ATC-Code: A02AA04; G04BX01).

Mechanism of action

Promotes bowel evacuation by causing osmotic retention of fluid which distends colon with increased peristaltic activity. Reacts with hydrochloric acid in stomach to form magnesium chloride.

Therapeutic use

Short-term treatment of occasional constipation and symptoms of hyperacidity, laxative. Dietary supplement.

Contraindications

Hypersensitivity to magnesium hydroxide or any component of the formulation.

Warnings and precautions

Use with extreme caution in myasthenia gravis or other neuromuscular disease. Use with caution in renal impairment (accumulation might lead to magnesium intoxication). Serious side-effects might occur with prolonged use.
