Magnesium Salicylate: C~14~H~10~MgO~6~ 4H~2~O. Mw: 370.59. (1) Magnesium, bis(2-hydroxybenzoato-O^1^,O^2^)-, tetrahydrate; (2) Magnesium salicylate (1:2), tetrahydrate. CAS-18917-95-8; CAS-18917-89-0 (anhydrous).

Pharmacologic Category

Nonsteroidal Anti-inflammatory Agents; Salicylate Salts. (ATC-Code: N02BA).

Mechanism of action

Therapeutic use

Mild-to-moderate pain, fever, various inflammatory conditions. Pain and inflammation of rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis.

Pregnancy and lactiation implications

Specific reproduction studies not conducted. Salicylates excreted into human milk. Breast-feeding not recommended.

Unlabeled use

Contraindications

Hypersensitivity to magnesium salicylate, salicylates, other NSAIDs, or any component of the formulation. Advanced chronic renal dysfunction. With uricosuric agents. History of chronic salicylate use, carditis, chronic liver dysfunction (≥65 years of age).

Warnings and precautions

Patients with sensitivity to tartrazine dyes, nasal polyps, and asthma may have increased risk of salicylate sensitivity. Tinnitus or impaired hearing possible. Use with caution in bleeding disorders. Heavy ethanol use (>3 drinks/day) can increase bleeding risks. Use with caution in dehydration. Use with caution in erosive gastritis or peptic ulcer. Use with caution in hepatic or renal impairment (avoid use in severe impairment). Use high doses with caution in hypoprothrombinemia and/or vitamin K deficiency. Children and teenagers who have or are recovering from chickenpox or flu-like symptoms should not use this product. Changes in behavior (along with nausea and vomiting) might be early sign of Reye’s syndrome. Use with caution prior to surgery (to reduce risk of excessive bleeding).
