Chemistry

Pharmacologic Category

Replacement Preparations; Electrolyte Solutions. Nutritional Supplements. Parenteral Trace Element. (ATC-Code: A12C; B05XA).

Mechanism of action

Cofactor which stimulates synthesis of cholesterol and fatty acids in liver, and influences mucopolysaccharide synthesis.

Therapeutic use

Trace element added to total parenteral nutrition solution to prevent manganese deficiency. Orally as dietary supplement.

Pregnancy and lactiation implications

Normal concentrations of manganese found in human milk are generally lower than cow’s milk or those found in food sources. Compatible with breast-feeding.

Unlabeled use

Contraindications

High manganese levels. Severe liver dysfunction or cholestasis (conjugated bilirubin >2 mg/dL) due to reduced biliary excretion.

Warnings and precautions

Use with caution in hepatic impairment. Manganese chloride solution for injection contains aluminum (use caution with impaired renal function and in premature infants).
