Mechanism of action
Affects thalamus and limbic system; also appears to inhibit multineuronal spinal reflexes.
Therapeutic use
Management of anxiety disorders.
Pregnancy and lactiation implications
Increased risk of fetal harm during 1^st^ trimester of pregnancy. Avoid use in pregnant women and during lactation.
Unlabeled use
Muscle contraction, headache, premenstrual tension, external sphincter spasticity, muscle rigidity, opisthotonos-associated with tetanus. Treatment of muscle spasm associated with acute temporomandibular joint pain. Management of dental anxiety disorders.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to meprobamate, related compounds (including carisoprodol), or any component of the formulation. Acute intermittent porphyria. Pre-existing CNS depression. Narrow-angle glaucoma. Severe uncontrolled pain. Pregnancy.
Warnings and precautions
Allergic reactions might occur in history of dermatological condition (usually by fourth dose). Might cause CNS depression. Use with caution in depression or suicidal tendencies. Potential for drug dependency. Tolerance, psychological and physical dependence might occur with prolonged use. Use with caution in hepatic or renal impairment, and in history of seizure disorder. Effects may be potentiated when used with other sedative drugs or ethanol. Use with caution in the elderly (might cause confusion, cognitive impairment, or excessive sedation). Abrupt discontinuation might precipitate withdrawal symptoms.
