Pharmacologic Category

Other Miscellaneous Therapeutic Agents; Tyrosine Hydroxylase Inhibitor. (ATC-Code: C02KB01).

Mechanism of action

Blocks conversion of tyrosine to dihydroxyphenylalanine. This inhibition results in decreased levels of endogenous catecholamines.

Therapeutic use

Short-term management of pheochromocytoma before surgery, long-term management when surgery is contraindicated or when chronic malignant pheochromocytoma exists.

Pregnancy and lactiation implications

Unknown whether metyrosine can cause fetal harm when administered to pregnant women. Metyrosine should be used during pregnancy only when clearly needed. Should be used with caution in nursing women.

Contraindications

Hypersensitivity to metyrosine or any component of the formulation. Hypertension of unknown etiology.

Warnings and precautions

Might cause CNS depression. Use with caution in hepatic and renal impairment. Effects may be potentiated when used with other sedative drugs or ethanol. Fluid volume should be maintained during and after surgery.
