Pharmacologic Category

Vitamins; Vitamin B Complex. (ATC-Code: A11HA01).

Mechanism of action

Used by body as source of niacin. A component of two coenzymes necessary for tissue respiration, lipid metabolism, and glycogenolysis. Niacinamide has anti-inflammatory properties, believed to help decrease inflammatory acne lesions.

Therapeutic use

Prophylaxis and treatment of pellagra. Improving appearance of acne and decreasing visible inflammation and irritation caused by acne medications.

Pregnancy and lactiation implications

Use with caution in pregnant and nursing women.

Unlabeled use

Contraindications

Hypersensitivity to niacin, niacinamide, or any component of the formulation. Liver disease. Active peptic ulcer.

Warnings and precautions

Use with caution in allergies, renal impairment, heavy ethanol users or predisposition to gout. Use with caution in unstable angina or coronary artery disease (risk of arrhythmias at high doses). Use with caution in diabetes mellitus (interferes with glucose control), and in active gallbladder disease (can be exacerbated). Avoid large pharmacological amounts in history of liver disease.
