Mechanism of action
Nonoxynol 9 is a surfactant which prevents pregnancy by damaging cell membrane of sperm. Some product formulations may also provide physical barrier.

Prevention of pregnancy.

Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to nonoxynol 9 or any component of the formulation.
Warnings and precautions
Toxic shock syndrome reported with barrier contraceptive use. May cause vaginal irritation (e.g. burning, itching or rash). Nonoxynol 9 does not protect against HIV infection or other sexually-transmitted diseases and use may increase risk of getting HIV from infected partner. Not for use in HIV or with sexual partner with HIV. Not for use as microbicide or lubricant during anal intercourse. Rectal use may cause irritation, which may increase risk of getting HIV from infected partner.
