Pharmacologic Category
Antibacterials, Tetracyclines. EENT Preparations; Antibacterials. Skin and Mucous Membrane Agents; Antibacterials. (ATC-Code: D06AA03; G01AA07; J01AA06; S01AA04).
Mechanism of action
Inhibits bacterial protein synthesis by binding with 30 S and possibly 50 S ribosomal subunit(s) of susceptible bacteria; cell wall synthesis not affected.
Therapeutic use
Treatment of susceptible bacterial infections; both Gram-positive and Gram-negative, as well as Rickettsia and Mycoplasma organisms.
Pregnancy and lactiation implications
Tetracyclines not recommended for use during pregnancy. Lactation not recommended.
Unlabeled use
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to tetracycline or any component of the formulation.
Warnings and precautions
Avoid in children ≤8 years of age, pregnant and nursing women. Photosensitivity can occur with oxytetracycline. Photosensitivity manifested by exaggerated sunburn reaction observed in some individuals taking tetracyclines. Discontinue treatment at first evidence of skin erythema. Antianabolic action of tetracyclines may cause increase in BUN (may lead to azotemia, hyperphosphatemia, and acidosis). Avoid use in severe liver disease. Injection for I.M. use only.
