Pharmacologic Category

Anticholinergic Agents; Antimuscarinics/Antispasmodics. (ATC-Code: A03AB05).

Mechanism of action

Competitively blocks action of acetylcholine at postganglionic parasympathetic receptor sites.

Therapeutic use

Adjunctive treatment of peptic ulcer, irritable bowel syndrome, pancreatitis, ureteral and urinary bladder spasm. Reduce duodenal motility during diagnostic radiologic procedures.

Pregnancy and lactiation implications

Caution if used in pregnant or nursing women. May suppress lactation.

Unlabeled use

Contraindications

Hypersensitivity to propantheline or any component of the formulation. Ulcerative colitis, toxic megacolon, obstructive disease of GI or urinary tract. Narrow-angle glaucoma. Myasthenia gravis.

Warnings and precautions

May cause drowsiness and/or blurred vision. Diarrhea may be sign of incomplete intestinal obstruction. Heat prostration may occur in increased environmental temperature (use caution in hot weather and/or exercise). Use with caution in coronary artery disease, tachyarrhythmias, heart failure, or hypertension. Use with caution in the following cases: endocrine diseases, GI infections, hepatic impairment, hiatal hernia with reflux esophagitis, hyperthyroidism, autonomic neuropathy, and renal impairment. Use with caution in the elderly (increased risk for anticholinergic effects, confusion, and hallucinations).
