Psyllium Hemicellulose: Hemicellulose. CAS-9034-32-6 (2004).

Pharmacologic Category

Antidiarrhea Agents. Cathartics and Laxatives; Bulk-Forming Laxatives. (ATC-Code: A06AC01).

Mechanism of action

Absorbs water in intestine to form viscous liquid which promotes peristalsis and reduces transit time.

Therapeutic use

Dietary fiber supplement. Treatment of occasional constipation. Reduce risk of coronary heart disease.

Pregnancy and lactiation implications

Unlabeled use

Treatment of diarrhea, chronic constipation, irritable bowel syndrome, inflammatory bowel disease, colon cancer, or diabetes.

Contraindications

Hypersensitivity to psyllium or any component of the formulation. Fecal impaction. Genitourinary obstruction.

Warnings and precautions

Use with caution in esophageal structures, ulcers, stenosis, or intestinal adhesions or difficulty swallowing. Use with caution in the elderly (may have insufficient fluid intake which may predispose them to fecal impaction and bowel obstruction). Some products may contain calcium, phenylalanine, potassium, sodium, soy lecithin.
