Pharmacologic Category

Nutritional Supplements. Probiotic. (ATC-Code: A07FA02).

Mechanism of action

A nonpathogenic live yeast probiotic. Acts as temporary flora to help re-establish normal GI microflora. May also modulate immune system by inducing cytokines and suppress pathogenic bacteria growth.

Therapeutic use

Promotes maintenance of normal microflora in GI tract. Bloating, gas, and diarrhea (to decrease incidence of diarrhea associated with antibiotic use).

Contraindications

Hypersensitivity to Saccharomyces boulardii or any component of the formulation.

Warnings and precautions

Use with caution in allergy to yeast. Avoid use in concurrent systemic antifungals (S. boulardii may be susceptible). Use with caution or avoid use in immunocompromised, debilitated, or critically ill patients (S. boulardii use associated with case reports of fungemia in this population). Some products may contain lactose (caution if lactose intolerance). Significant differences may exist from one preparation of S. boulardii compared to another regarding biologic activity and composition. Probiotics are classified as dietary supplements.
