Chemistry
Simethicone: A mixture of poly(dimethylsiloxane)(in the graphic formula, the calculated average value of n is 200 to 350) and silicon dioxide. α-(Trimethylsilyl)-ω-methylpoly[oxy(dimethylsilylene), mixture with silicon dioxide. CAS-8050-81-5 (1963).
Pharmacologic Category
Antiflatulents.
Mechanism of action
Silicone antifoams spread on surface of aqueous liquids, forming low surface tension film and causing collapse of foam bubbles. May allow mucus-surrounded gas bubbles in gastrointestinal tract to coalesce and be expelled.
Therapeutic use
Postoperative gas pain or for use in endoscopic examination. Relief of bloating, pressure, and discomfort of gas.
Pregnancy and lactiation implications
Unlabeled use
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to simethicone or any component of the formulation.
