Chemistry

Simethicone: A mixture of poly(dimethylsiloxane)(in the graphic formula, the calculated average value of n is 200 to 350) and silicon dioxide. α-(Trimethylsilyl)-ω-methylpoly[oxy(dimethylsilylene), mixture with silicon dioxide. CAS-8050-81-5 (1963).

Pharmacologic Category

Antiflatulents.

Mechanism of action

Silicone antifoams spread on surface of aqueous liquids, forming low surface tension film and causing collapse of foam bubbles. May allow mucus-surrounded gas bubbles in gastrointestinal tract to coalesce and be expelled.

Therapeutic use

Postoperative gas pain or for use in endoscopic examination. Relief of bloating, pressure, and discomfort of gas.
