Chemistry

Sinecatechins: (1) Tea (Camellia sinensis), ext; (2) Major chemical constituents are (-)-Epicatechin, (-)-Epigallocatechin with their corresponding 3-gallate esters, and their corresponding epimers. CAS-811420-59-4 (2006).

Pharmacologic Category

Skin and Mucous Membrane Agents, Miscellaneous. Topical Immunomodulator. (ATC-Code: D06BB12).

Mechanism of action

Mechanism of action unknown. Antioxidant properties demonstrated in vitro (significance of this finding unknown).

Therapeutic use

External genital and perianal warts secondary to Condylomata acuminate.

Pregnancy and lactiation implications

Teratogenic effects not observed in animals. There are no adequate studies in pregnant women. Use only if possible benefit outweighs potential risk to fetus. Sinecatechins ointment may weaken condoms and diaphragms. Excretion in breast milk unknown (use caution).

Warnings and precautions

Local skin reactions common. Not intended for treatment of urethral, intravaginal, cervical, rectal, or intra-anal human papilloma viral disease. Severe reactions reported more commonly in women. For topical use only; ointment not intended for internal use; avoid topical application to open wounds. Avoid exposure of treated area to sun and/or UV-light.
