Pharmacologic Category
Diagnostic Agents; Thyroid Function. Antithyroid Agent. Radiopharmaceutical. (ATC-Code: V09FX02; V09FX03; V10XA01).
Mechanism of action
Therapeutic use
Diagnostic use with radioactive iodide uptake test to evaluate thyroid function. Treatment of hyperthyroidism and select cases of thyroid cancer.
Pregnancy and lactiation implications
Iodine (^131^I) crosses placenta and may cause severe and irreversible hypothyroidism in neonates. Pregnancy should be ruled out prior to therapy. Enters breast milk (not recommended in nursing women).
Unlabeled use
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to iodine or any component of the formulation. Pre-existing vomiting and diarrhea (treatment). Concurrent antithyroid medication. Pregnancy.
Warnings and precautions
Hyperthyroidism/thyrotoxic cardiac disease may be aggravated by radiation thyroiditis. Hypochloremia may increase thyroid uptake of sodium iodide (^131^I). Use with caution in renal impairment (risk of adverse reactions may be increased; nephrosis may increase thyroid uptake of sodium iodide (^131^I)). Concomitant use of iodine, thyroid, or antithyroid medications may interfere with uptake of radioiodide. Use not generally recommended for treatment of hyperthyroidism in patients <30 years of age. Some dosage forms may contain sodium bisulfite which may cause allergic reactions in some individuals.
