Pharmacologic Category

Sclerosing Agents.

Mechanism of action

Induces inflammatory reaction which promotes adherence of visceral to parietal pleura, therefore preventing reaccumulation of pleural fluid.

Therapeutic use

Prevention of recurrence of malignant pleural effusion in symptomatic patients.

Pregnancy and lactiation implications

Use only if potential benefit outweighs possible risk to fetus.

Warnings and precautions

Acute pneumonitis and acute respiratory distress syndrome (including one death) rarely reported with higher doses (10 g). Should not be used to treat malignancies. Does not have antineoplastic activity. Sclerosis of pleural space may preclude subsequent procedures (e.g. pneumonectomy for transplantation).
