Pharmacologic Category
Local Anesthetics. EENT Preparations; Local Anesthetics. (ATC-Code: C05AD02; D04AB06; N01BA03; S01HA03).
Mechanism of action
Blocks both initiation and conduction of nerve impulses by decreasing permeability to sodium ions of neuronal membrane, which results in inhibition of depolarization with resultant blockade of conduction.
Therapeutic use
Spinal anesthesia. Local anesthesia in eye for diagnostic and examination purposes. Topically applied to nose and throat for diagnostic procedures.
Pregnancy and lactiation implications
Animal reproduction studies not conducted. Use with caution in pregnancy and in nursing women.
Unlabeled use
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to tetracaine, ester-type anesthetics, aminobenzoic acid, or any component of the formulation. Injection should not be used when spinal anesthesia contraindicated.
Warnings and precautions
Use with caution in cardiovascular disease, in abnormal or decreased levels of plasma esterases, in hyperthyroidism, in acutely ill or debilitated patients, in obstetric patients, and in increased intra-abdominal pressure. Prolonged use not recommended in ophthalmic administration. Products may contain sodium bisulfite which may cause allergic reactions in some individuals.
