Chemistry
Vitamin E: It may consist of D- or D/L-α tocopherol (C~29~H~50~O~2~), D- or D/L-α tocopheryl acetate (C~31~H~52~O~3~), D- or D/L-α tocopheryl acid succinate (C~33~H~54~O~5~), mixed tocopherols concentrate, or D-α tocopheryl acetate concentrate.
Pharmacologic Category
Vitamins; Vitamin E. (ATC-Code: A11HA03).
Mechanism of action
Prevents oxidation of vitamins A and C. Protects polyunsaturated fatty acids in membranes from attack by free radicals and protects red blood cells against hemolysis.
Therapeutic use
Dietary supplement.
Pregnancy and lactiation implications
Distributed into human milk.
Unlabeled use
Reduction of risk of bronchopulmonary dysplasia or retrolental fibroplasia in infants exposed to high concentrations of oxygen. Prevention and treatment of tardive dyskinesia. Prevention and treatment of hemolytic anemia secondary to vitamin E deficiency. Has been evaluated for palliative treatment of moderately severe dementia of the Alzheimer’s type (Alzheimer’s disease, presenile or senile dementia).
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to vitamin E or any component of the formulation.
Warnings and precautions
May induce vitamin K deficiency. Necrotizing enterocolitis associated with oral administration of large dosages (e.g. >200 units/day) of hyperosmolar vitamin E preparation in low birth weight infants.
