Pharmacologic Category

EENT Preparation; Antivirals. Ophthalmic Antiviral Agent. (ATC-Code: S01AD02).

Mechanism of action

Interferes with viral replication by incorporating into viral DNA in place of thymidine, inhibiting thymidylate synthetase, resulting in formation of defective proteins.

Therapeutic use

Treatment of primary keratoconjunctivitis and recurrent epithelial keratitis caused by herpes simplex virus types I and II.

Contraindications

Hypersensitivity to trifluridine or any component of the formulation.

Warnings and precautions

Mild local irritation of conjunctiva and cornea may occur when instilled (usually transient effects).
