Chemistry

Xylometazoline Hydrochloride: C~16~H~24~N~2~ HCl. Mw: 280.84. (1) 1H-Imidazole, 2-[[4-(1,1-dimethylethyl)-2,6-dimethylphenyl]methyl]-4,5-dihydro-, monohydrochloride; (2) 2-(4-tert-Butyl-2,6-dimethylbenzyl)-2-imidazoline monohydrochloride. CAS-1218-35-5; CAS-526-36-3 (xylometazoline).

Pharmacologic Category

EENT Preparations; Vasoconstrictors. Imidazoline Derivative. Nasal Vasoconstrictor. (ATC-Code: R01AA07; S01GA03).

Mechanism of action

Stimulates α-adrenergic receptors in arterioles of conjunctiva and nasal mucosa to produce vasoconstriction.

Therapeutic use

Symptomatic relief of nasal and nasopharyngeal mucosal congestion.

Contraindications

Warnings and precautions

Excessive use may cause rebound congestion or chemical rhinitis. Use with caution in hypertension, diabetes, cardiovascular or coronary artery disease, hyperthyroidism, long-standing bronchial asthma.
