Mechanism of action
Indole alkaloid derived from bark of yohimbe tree (Corynanthe yohimbe). Produces presynaptic α~2~-adrenergic blockade. Peripheral autonomic effect is to increase cholinergic and decrease adrenergic activity. Also exerts stimulating effect on mood and mild antidiuretic effect.
Therapeutic use
Pregnancy and lactiation implications
Generally not for use in females. Do not use in pregnancy.
Unlabeled use
Treatment of SSRI-induced sexual dysfunction. Weight loss. Impotence. Sympathicolytic and mydriatic. May have aphrodisiac activity.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to yohimbine or any component of the formulation. Renal disease.
Warnings and precautions
Can cause nausea or vomiting. Use with caution in cardiovascular disease (may cause high blood pressure and tachycardia). Should not be used in history of gastric or duodenal ulcer, or in psychiatric disorders (may cause anxiety). Do not use in the elderly. Generally not for use in females. Do not use in children, or in pregnancy. May cause neutropenia.
