Pharmacologic Category

Antifungals; Echinocandins. (ATC-Code: J02AX06).

Mechanism of action

Decreases glucan content in Candida leading to osmotic instability and cellular lysis.

Therapeutic use

Treatment of candidemia and other forms of Candida infection (intra-abdominal, peritoneal, and esophageal locus).

Pregnancy and lactiation implications

There are no adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women. Use during pregnancy only if clearly needed. Use with caution during lactation.

Unlabeled use

Treatment of Aspergillus spp. infections.

Contraindications

Hypersensitivity to anidulafungin, other echinocandins, or any component of the formulation.

Warnings and precautions

Hepatic effects reported (elevated liver function tests, hepatitis, and worsening hepatic failure). Histamine-mediated reactions (e.g. urticaria, flushing, hypotension) observed.
