Pharmacologic Category

Antibacterials; Miscellaneous β-Lactams; Monobactams. (ATC-Code: J01DF01).

Mechanism of action

Inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis by binding to one or more of the penicillin-binding proteins which in turn inhibits the final transpeptidation step of peptidoglycan synthesis in bacterial cell walls.

Therapeutic use

Susceptible Gram-negative bacilli infections (urinary tract, lower respiratory tract, septicemia, skin/skin structure, intra-abdominal, gynecological).

Pregnancy and lactiation implications

Aztreonam crosses the placenta. Distribution to the fetus is minimal in early pregnancy. Aztreonam is used therapeutically in newborns. Not recommended during lactation.

Unlabeled use

Contraindications

Hypersensitivity to aztreonam or any component of the formulation.

Warnings and precautions

Cross-allergenicity to penicillins and cephalosporins may occur. Prolonged use may result in fungal or bacterial superinfection, including C. difficile-associated diarrhea and pseudomembranous colitis. Use with caution in renal impairment.
