Pharmacologic Category

Vitamins; Vitamin D. (ATC-Code: A11CC05 ).

Mechanism of action

A vitamin D~3~ compound (equipotent to vitamin D~2~) which increases absorption of calcium and phosphorus from the gastrointestinal tract.

Therapeutic use

Dietary supplement. Vitamin D deficiency (or prophylaxis of deficiency).

Pregnancy and lactiation implications

Unlabeled use


Hypercalcemia. Hypersensitivity to cholecalciferol or any component of the formulation. Malabsorption syndrome. Evidence of vitamin D toxicity.

Warnings and precautions

Administer with extreme caution in impaired renal function, heart disease, renal stones, or arteriosclerosis. Maintain adequate fluid intake. Avoid hypercalcemia. Must be administered with supplemental calcium. Caution in renal impairment and hyperparathyroidism. Use with caution in coronary artery disease and older adults.
