Drug combinations
Chemistry
Pharmacologic Category
Serums, Toxoids, and Vaccines; Vaccines. Inactivated Viral Vaccine. Live Viral Vaccine. (ATC-Code: J07BB).
Mechanism of action
Promotes immunity to influenza virus by inducing specific antibody production.
Therapeutic use
Provision of active immunity to influenza virus strains contained in vaccine.
Pregnancy and lactiation implications
It is suggested that pregnancy may increase risk of serious medical complications from influenza infection. Use of parenteral inactivated influenza vaccine (not intranasal live influenza vaccine) recommended in pregnant women.
Unlabeled use
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to influenza virus vaccine, or any component of the formulation. Presence of acute respiratory disease or other active infections or febrile illnesses. Active neurological disorder. Children 2-17 years of age receiving aspirin therapy (nasal spray).
Warnings and precautions
Anaphylactoid or hypersensitivity reactions might occur. Use with caution in history of Guillain-Barré syndrome. Use with caution in severely immunocompromised patients (e.g. patients receiving chemo/radiation therapy or other immunosuppressive therapy). Some products may contain arginine, chicken egg protein, gelatin, or gentamicin, neomycin, polymyxin, or thimerosal. Children with severe anaphylactic reactions to eggs should generally not receive vaccine. Use with caution in history of bleeding disorders (including thrombocytopenia) and/or patients on anticoagulant therapy (risk of bleeding or hematoma from I.M. administration). Packaging might contain natural latex rubber. For intranasal use only. Nasal spray should be used cautiously in asthma or children under 5 years of age with recurrent wheezing (increased risk of wheezing following vaccination). Influenza vaccines from previous seasons must not be used. Allergic reactions (e.g. urticaria, angioedema, anaphylaxis, allergic asthma) may result (rarely). Immune response to vaccine and efficacy may be reduced in immunosuppressed patients. May not protect all vaccine recipients against influenza. Annual vaccination needed. Administration should be delayed in moderate to severe acute febrile illness until symptoms have subsided. Risk of hematoma from I.M. injections.
