Chemistry
Malathion: C~10~H~19~O~6~PS~2~. Mw: 330.36. (1) Butanedioic acid, [(dimethoxyphosphinothioyl)-thio]-, diethyl ester, (±)-; (2) Diethyl (±)-mercaptosuccinate, S-ester with O,O-dimethyl phosphorodithioate. CAS-121-75-5.
Pharmacologic Category
Skin and Mucous Membrane Agents; Scabicides and Pediculicides. Topical Antiparasitic Agent. (ATC-Code: P03AX03).
Mechanism of action
Active in vitro and in vivo against Pediculus humanus var. capitis (head louse) and its nits (eggs) and Phthirus pubis (pubic or crab louse). Also active against Sarcoptes scabiei, causative agent of scabies. Might be active against some P. capitis resistant to permethrin and pyrethrins.
Therapeutic use
Treatment of head lice and their ova.
Pregnancy and lactiation implications
No evidence of teratogenicity in animal models. Use (or handle) during pregnancy only if clearly needed.

Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to malathion or any component of the formulation. Use in neonates and/or infants.
Warnings and precautions
Might be irritating to skin and scalp. Contraindicated in infants and neonates (increased absorption of malathion). For topical use only. Lotion is flammable.
