Chemistry

Miconazole Nitrate: C~18~H~14~Cl~4~N~2~O HNO~3~. Mw: 479.14. (1) 1H-Imidazole, 1-[2-(2,4-dichlorophenyl)-2-[(2,4-dichlorophenyl)methoxy]ethyl]-, mononitrate; (2) 1-[2,4-Dichloro-β-[(2,4-dichlorobenzyl)oxy]phenethyl]imidazole mononitrate. CAS-22832-87-7; CAS-22916-47-8 (miconazole)(1970).

Pharmacologic Category

Antifungals; Azoles. Topical Antifungal Agent, Vaginal Antifungal Agent. (ATC-Code: A01AB09; A07AC01; D01AC02; G01AF04; J02AB01; S02AA13).

Mechanism of action

Inhibits biosynthesis of ergosterol, damaging fungal cell wall membrane, which increases permeability causing leaking of nutrients.

Therapeutic use

Treatment of vulvovaginal candidiasis and a variety of skin and mucous membrane fungal infections.

Pregnancy and lactiation implications

Use with caution during pregnancy or lactation.

Contraindications

Hypersensitivity to miconazole or any component of the formulation.

Warnings and precautions

Irritation or sensitivity might occur. Vaginal products are petrolatum-based. For topical use only.
