Pharmacologic Category

Anti-infective Agents, Anthelmintics. (ATC-Code: P02CC01).

Mechanism of action

Causes release of acetylcholine and inhibits cholinesterase. Acts as depolarizing neuromuscular blocker, paralyzing helminths.

Therapeutic use

Treatment of pinworms (Enterobius vermicularis) and roundworms (Ascaris lumbricoides).

Pregnancy and lactiation implications

Unlabeled use

Treatment of whipworms (Trichuris trichiura) and hookworms (Ancylostoma duodenale).

Contraindications

Hypersensitivity to pyrantel pamoate or any component of the formulation.

Warnings and precautions

Use with caution in anemia, hepatic impairment, malnutrition, and pregnancy. Pinworm infections easily spread to others.
