Chemistry
Pharmacologic Category
Cathartics and Laxatives; Stimulant Laxative. (ATC-code: A06AB06).
Mechanism of action
Stimulant laxative. Primary active cathartic principles are stereoisomeric glucosides, sennosides A and B. Increases concentrations of cAMP in colonic mucosal cells and may alter permeability of these cells and mediate active ion secretion, producing net fluid accumulation and laxative action. Stimulant laxatives may also induce defecation by stimulating propulsive peristaltic activity of intestine through local irritation of mucosa or through a more selective action on intramural nerve plexus of intestinal smooth muscle, thus increasing motility.
Therapeutic use
Short-term treatment of constipation. Evacuation of colon for bowel or rectal examinations.
Pregnancy and lactiation implications
May be distributed into milk. Unlikely to appear in sufficient amounts to affect nursing infants. Compatible with breast-feeding.
Unlabeled use
Contraindications
Intestinal obstruction, acute intestinal inflammation (e.g. Crohn’s disease), colitis ulcerosa, appendicitis, abdominal pain of unknown origin. Pregnancy.
Warnings and precautions
Not recommended for use in stomach pain, nausea, vomiting, or sudden change in bowel movements which lasts >2 weeks. Not recommended for self-medication use in children <2 years of age.
