Chemistry

Tioconazole: C~16~H~13~Cl~3~N~2~OS. Mw: 387.71. (1) 1H-Imidazole, 1-[2-[(2-chloro-3-thienyl)methoxy]-2-(2,4-dichlorophenyl)ethyl]-; (2) 1-[2,4-Dichloro-[β-(2-chloro-3-thenyl)oxy]phenethyl]imidazole. CAS-65899-73-2 (1978).

Pharmacologic Category

Skin and Mucous Membrane Agents; Antifungals; Azoles. Vaginal Antifungal Agent. (ATC-Code: D01AC07; G01AF08).

Mechanism of action

A 1-substituted imidazole derivative with broad antifungal spectrum against a wide variety of dermatophytes and yeasts, including Trichophyton mentagrophytes, T. rubrum, T. erinacei, T. tonsurans, Microsporum canis, Microsporum gypseum, and Candida albicans.

Therapeutic use

Local treatment of vulvovaginal candidiasis.

Pregnancy and lactiation implications

Use with caution in pregnancy. Excretion in breast milk unknown (not recommended in nursing women).

Contraindications

Hypersensitivity to tioconazole or any component of the formulation.

Warnings and precautions

Irritation or sensitization can occur. Petrolatum-based vaginal products may damage rubber or latex condoms or diaphragms.
